Complaint: Urinary incontinence (3-6 occurrences/day), depression and extreme fatigue stopping patient from functioning in society including schooling and employment
History: 19 year old female with 9 year history of depression, 5 year history of urinary incontinence and extremely low energy. Medication taken for depression, incontinence and fatigue.
Additional: Patient had no energy unless medication was taken in morning (1-10 scale, 1 low energy, 10 high; with meds energy was 5 of 10; without 1-2). After treatments patient no longer is taking this prescription and energy is at a 5 of 10 level - the same level of energy she had while taking the medication. She is no longer feeling the extreme fatigue she would feel when the medication was not taken prior to treatments. Incontinence: Patient is no longer taking prescription medication for incontinence and in the past 2 months has only had 1 occurrence of incontinence when she averaged 3-6 occurrences per day prior to the acupuncture treatments (with meds!). Depression: Patient had constant sadness which was intensified during period. Patient currently is taking 1/3 dose of depressive medication without any signs of depression or sadness and plans to be decreasing this dosage again in the near future.
The patient is more active, mentally alert and highly functional. She is taking general education classes at a local college and plans on living a healthy and optimistic life now that she is feeling well.
Emphysema Case Study for A.P. - 56 year old male
History: Patient was diagnosed in 2000 with emphysema from a past history of smoking. The patient uses oxygen at night along with medications each day (albuterol, spiriva, advair, allegra).
The patient came into the office for his first treatment on April 14, 2009 asking for treatment to help him “somewhat (obtain) more function of the lungs.” He explained he wants to have “more good days than bad days” and decrease the progression of his disorder.
The patient stated that any physical activity would create a shortness of breath. His primary example was walking from his work area of employment out to his work truck. He noted also that caring for his yard was difficult because he easily would become short of breath and fatigued and would need to rest for long durations before he was functional again.
The treatment goal set up for the patient was to help him regain more function of his lungs and his lung capacity therefore providing him with the opportunity for more functionality in his daily life while decreasing the rate of progression of emphysema.
The patient began noticing less shortness of breath after only a few treatments and continues to receive treatments to further continue to decrease his shortness of breath and to maintain the progress achieved so far.
The patient states he now can be more active in and out of work and that walking to his truck no longer is an issue and he is able to get out in the yard and do much more work with a great decrease in the shortness of breath he suffered from in the past. In addition, when he is fatigued his recovery time has been greatly decreased. He states that overall walking around and physical activity no longer creates such an impact on his breathing and no longer generates the fatigue it once did.
In fact, the patient has gone on vacation and forgotten his his medication for a 24 hour time period. When he went to the pharmacy to pick up a new order of his prescription while still on vacation the pharmacist was impressed that he was looking and feeling as well as he said he was without the medication for the 24 hour time frame.
The patient also has reported that his medical doctors have stated that his pulmonary examinations including his testing with the spirometer have improved and the lungs are functioning at a higher level.
Carpal Tunnel: The patient came into the office with the main complaint of right wrist and arm pain which was diagnosed by the patient’s primary care physician as carpel tunnel syndrome related pain. The patient states, “I already had surgery for carpel tunnel syndrome, but it began hurting again. I did not want to do this again (surgery) so I decided to try acupuncture.”
In addition to the past surgery for the carpel tunnel syndrome the patient was in physical therapy and taking much advil to reduce the pain. The patient came into the office seeking a decrease in pain and an increase in her ability to use her arm for that it inhibited her in not only daily functions and exercise but also greatly decreased her ability to work for that her job requires constant use of the right arm.
The patient now states, after treatments that “I am no longer in agony with the pain” and that “I am able to perform duties for my business, which was getting more difficult every year.”

“No concerns, just an interest and curiosity. I knew there must be something to these treatments that have been around for so long.”

I have been to many doctors for many different health problems; the most severe health issue is the osteoarthritis. I had neck surgery in 2001 because of the degeneration in my bones and discs. My daughter was the catalyst for my seeing Dr. Jon Hagenburg. She kept insisting that I go see him; but I was very reluctant, until one night I was in tears from the pain - I have a high threshold for pain so this was rare. I told her I had an appointment with a neurologist the next day, but she insisted I see Dr. Hagenburg. I said okay, she immediately called him and he scheduled me the next day.
